Bugs That Resemble Bed Bugs

Bugs That Resemble Bed Bugs: What New Jersey Homeowners Need to Know

Bed bugs are a major concern for homeowners across New Jersey, but not every small, brown bug is a bed bug. Many insects look similar and are often mistaken for bed bugs, leading to confusion and unnecessary panic. At Seek Pest Solutions, we want to help you identify what you’re dealing with—because proper pest control starts with proper identification.

Here are some common bed bug look-alikes found in New Jersey:

1. Bat Bugs

Bat bugs are almost identical to bed bugs in size, shape, and color. The main difference is their habitat. While bed bugs prefer human environments, bat bugs are usually found near bats or in attics where bats may roost. If bats are living in your attic or chimney, bat bugs can migrate into living spaces. A trained professional is usually needed to tell them apart under magnification.

2. Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetles are another common pest that people mistake for bed bugs. Unlike bed bugs, carpet beetles are rounder, have wings, and are covered in tiny hairs. Their larvae can be especially concerning—they’re fuzzy and can cause skin irritation, often mistaken for bed bug bites. They feed on fabric, pet hair, and other organic materials, not blood.

3. Spider Beetles

Spider beetles are tiny, reddish-brown pests with a bulbous body and long legs. They resemble bed bugs at a glance, especially in low lighting. However, these beetles are usually found in pantries or stored food areas and feed on grains, not blood. They are harmless but can still be an annoying presence in your home.

4. Booklice (Psocids)

Booklice are very small (1–2 mm), pale or grayish insects that sometimes infest damp areas of the home, such as basements, around windows, or bathrooms. They’re often mistaken for baby bed bugs, but they do not bite or feed on blood. They thrive in humidity and feed on mold and mildew.

5. Cockroach Nymphs

Baby cockroaches, or nymphs, can look very similar to bed bugs—small, dark, and oval-shaped. However, cockroach nymphs move much faster and are more likely to be found in kitchens or bathrooms. Unlike bed bugs, they don’t feed on blood but can still pose serious health risks due to bacteria and allergens.
